Sound Ranging Chief

Listens for report of enemy guns or for exploding shells of friendly artillery from one of several observation posts.

Connects telephone and capacitator unit to wire installations. Performs operational test on circuit and equipment.  Transmits sound at the moment of its occurrence by pressing a button on an electrical device, which starts an electrical recording mechanism at a central station used to provide means of locating the position of guns or bursts by calculations based upon the time interval in which the sound was recorded from the various positions.

Must be able to judge caliber of different type artillery pieces and be able to distinguish between them by sound of projectile in flight, report of discharge, sound of bursts or by examination of shell fragments.

At supervisory level, is responsible for control and coordination of a crew of sound ranging specialists.
